One of the best things about Jiu-Jitsu is also one of the hardest parts at the beginning:
Jiu-Jitsu takes time.
It’s not an instant-gratification activity where kids “master it” in a few weeks.
Your child is learning a new way to move, think, and solve problems under pressure.
So if you’re wondering, “How do I know my child is doing well?”
Here’s what we want you to look for.
✅Success is NOT just winning
It’s totally normal for kids to look awkward at first, forget steps, or struggle during sparring.
That doesn’t mean they aren’t improving.
It means they’re learning something real.
✅ What progress REALLY looks like (especially early on)
For our youngest students, success might look like:
- Staying focused 60 seconds longer than they could on day one
- Following directions without getting distracted
- Keeping their hands to themselves and showing self-control
- Participating confidently, even if they’re nervous
For older kids, success might look like:
- Making eye contact when an instructor is speaking
- Listening and responding to coaching cues
- Trying the technique instead of freezing
- Being respectful with partners, even when frustrated
✅“Jiu Jitsu wins” you might miss (but we’re celebrating)
In the early stages, a “win” can be:
- A strong shrimp (hip escape)
- A safe break fall
- Remembering where to put hands and feet
- Escaping a position they couldn’t escape last month
- Staying calm during a tough round
These are the building blocks that lead to real confidence and real skill.
🧠 Why we share this with you
Parents who have never trained often expect their child to look like a mini black belt quickly, and that’s totally understandable.
But Jiu-Jitsu is layered.
It’s built through repetition.
And the students who stick with it are the ones who focus on progress, not perfection.
If you ever have questions about how your child is doing, please ask us.
We’re happy to share what we’re seeing and what we’re working on next.
Because when you know what success looks like, you’ll start noticing it everywhere.
