“The foundation of the technique is timing, balance, and position and I think that’s true for almost all positions.” -Jeff Crum
Before we even get to the half guard position, distance management and getting the top position are really important. Ideally if I can, I’m going to start off here. (Image 1) My partner will be trying to get sleeve grips. I’m going to move and try to avoid those, until I can get the position I want. Now, that’s probably not going to be half guard. If I can I’m going to pass but I wanted to point out distance management because once we get in half guard the same thing applies. If my partner has sleeve grip and lapel grips and has got me tied up here (Image 2).
I’m not going to be able to work the technique I want. As soon as I get into this half guard position I want to start to control my posture and control where he’s at. There’s grip fighting that happens in Judo, the same thing applies here. My partner is trying to grip my sleeves. I’m going to roll my wrist and try to beat him and grab his sleeve. Or whatever grip I’m trying to go for.
So with this half guard pass, I want to be postured up. I want to weave my arm under his top leg and grip his pants on the bottom leg. I have his legs now tied up. It’s a good position if he’s got the knee shield (Image 3).
From here, I prefer the lapel. I can grab his sleeve but I want the lapel because I can control his upper body and his ability to turn into me (Image 4).
Next I want to get my knee up onto his thigh. Similar to a knee slice pass (Image 5). I also want to use my shoulder to keep the pressure on his top leg. This isn’t a normal knee slice, he’s probably going to prevent me from doing that by fighting with elbows. So, I’m going to drive my leg out towards his knee (Image 6).
I still have my grip on his lapel and at the same time, I’m using my head to keep him at bay (Image 7). Now from here with live toes, I’m going to come around I’m going to use my hips to set in and drive his leg over to the other side (Image 8). Once you’re here, you can settle into 100 kilos or your favorite side control position.
