This technique will start in the side control position. Our arm is underneath his arm. Last week we talked about putting our hand on our cheek. If he were to bring that hand over our head, we can catch him in the Americana. With the hand on the cheek, we’re going to put our other hand on the back of his head. Then we’re going to take our right knee and thigh and slide it toward his armpit, under his arm.
As we lift his head we’re going to step over it with our left foot and scooping our leg under his head trying to triangle your feet if you can.
Now, as your advancing toward the inverted arm lock, he may be able to bend his arm and keep it south. You won’t be able to get that inverted arm lock. So, if this is the case, You’re going to keep your hand on the mat. You’re simply going to transition to the other side for a straight arm lock.
Now, our right knee that was under his armpit, we’re going to lift it towards the sky, sliding the left knee forward. Both knees are now pointing up. Controlling his hand and finishing the arm lock.
And there you have it, a simple counter to the inverted arm lock from side control when your opponent defends and tries to muscle his arm down, making that inverted arm lock impossible. Keep this technique in mind the next time you compete.
