This month at the Academy we’ve been focusing a lot on Omaplatas. So, we wanted to bring you guys one more strategy for the Omaplata.
When we sit up to try to attack, it’s very common that our partner tries to beat us on the posture battle. When this happens we can create a situation where we can do a backward roll.
So, when I have Professor Boo in an Omaplata my goal is to try to sit up, hug his back and of course try to finish the Omaplata. However, he is going to be fighting me a lot by posturing up. A lot of times guys tend to hang out with a figure four which I don’t recommend. It’s possible they will grab your foot, start to manipulate and either try to submit or try to escape the Omaplata here.
So when your partner is really posturing up what I’m going to recommend is that you control his sleeve and control his belt. When we do this we’re going to open up and we’re going to do an extension of the body.
I’m going to roll over my shoulder closest to him. Come up and finish. Now, it’s very important that your partner is very actively trying to sit up. Otherwise, it’s going to be very hard to do the backward roll and get him to follow you back that way. So apart of this move, he’s doing the job for us.
Once I come up I’m going to sit on his shoulder, there’s a lot of options here. I could turn and finish in side control, I could do a back step and do another Omaplata. I could back step and go for an Armbar or a Triangle. You really have a lot of options off of this transition. It all comes down to you sitting up and doing the backward roll and trying to roll out the backside.
