This is a shoulder roll. So when we do a shoulder roll the first thing that should touch the mat is not your head but actually your shoulder. We’re going to dive this arm through (right) to allow this shoulder (right) to drop to the mat first. We’re actually going to go diagonally, across the back.
So instead of going straight down we’re going to go from shoulder to hip. So when I roll through, my shoulder touches the mat, my right shoulder and my left hip actually hits the floor. Then normally we’d come all the way up on our knees. But the idea is to go diagonally. and not such a forward shoulder roll. A backward shoulder roll would just be in reverse. So I’ll actually go from hip to shoulder when I come backwards.
I like for our students to try this with one knee up and one knee down. So it kind of dictates which side you’re gonna roll with but you can have both knees down. But like I said I recommend starting with the knee down and one knee up position to make it a smoother process, and that is a Shoulder Roll.
